Who we build on.
Skysta stands on other people’s work: forecasts, maps, place names, code and a typeface. Here is every one, with its licence, and what we changed.
Contents
Apple Weather
The Sky Score on this site and in the app is made from Apple Weather data, modified by Skysta. Apple’s forecast is where every reading starts: the cloud, rain, humidity, visibility, temperature, wind and pressure the score is worked out from.
Apple lists the sources behind its own data on its weather data sources page. The same link sits beside every score, under Apple’s mark.
Apple also asks us to say this, in its own words: YOUR USE OF THIS REAL TIME WEATHER GUIDANCE APPLICATION OR WEBSITE IS AT YOUR SOLE RISK. WEATHER DATA MAY NOT BE ACCURATE. Apple Weather Data may vary from actual conditions due to variable factors, such as signal issues and geopolitical events, that can affect the accuracy of Apple Weather Data. It is in section 4 of our terms, which cover this website as well as the app.
Open-Meteo
Cloud layers, haze and place search by Open-Meteo.com, under CC BY 4.0. We modify the cloud and haze data to make the Sky Score. The app reads only the haze from Open-Meteo; this site also reads its cloud layers, because Apple’s web service doesn’t say how high the cloud sits.
Open-Meteo builds its forecasts from national weather services, and its licence page names each one.
For places in and near the UK and Ireland, the cloud layers on this site come from ECMWF’s open forecast, through Open-Meteo, under CC BY 4.0. They are based on data and products of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), and we modify them to make the Sky Score. ECMWF also asks us to say this, in its own words: ECMWF does not accept any liability whatsoever for any error or omission in the data, their availability, or for any loss or damage arising from their use.
Copernicus
The haze reading comes from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service, through Open-Meteo.
Contains modified Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service information 2026. Neither the European Commission nor ECMWF is responsible for any use that may be made of the Copernicus information or data it contains. GeoNames
Location data based on GeoNames, CC BY 4.0. It is behind the place search on this site, through Open-Meteo’s geocoder, and the time zone a place’s times are shown in.
Maps
The map on the spots pages is OpenFreeMap © OpenMapTiles, with data from OpenStreetMap contributors under the Open Database License. Its look is ours, after the Dark Matter style, and that style’s licence ships beside ours: map style licence.
When a browser can’t draw that map, the plain one underneath it is OpenStreetMap’s own tiles. When you share where you are, the name of your town comes from OpenStreetMap too.
In the app, maps are Apple Maps, and Apple’s own credit and legal link sit on every one.
Code and fonts
- MapLibre GL JS draws the map. BSD 3-Clause: licence.
- Leaflet draws the plain map. BSD 2-Clause: licence.
- Source Serif 4, by Adobe, sets every headline. SIL Open Font License 1.1: font licence. This site serves a smaller cut of it with only the letters the pages use.
The app’s own licences, every notice in full, are inside it at Settings, About, Acknowledgements.
